I'll be honest it's not something I fully realised pre-diagnosis, but I definitely struggle with processing generally. However, the effectiveness of these devices for children with ASD-AH has not. I feel like it actually makes registering the action on screen easier for me as well, weirdly, probably because it's a few less braincells I need to devote to processing the dialogue. To date, a few researchers have reported the benefits of earmuffs and earplugs for children with central auditory processing disorders who have difficulty concentrating and processing auditory input in busy environments (Hasbrouck, 1980 Willford & Burleigh, 1985).

It's not that I can't understand TV without it, it's just it makes it easier to process. Multiple tills beeping, conveyor belts whirring, the self service checkouts playing messages, people talking, the store radio in the background - it can all get too much very quickly.Īnd chalk me up as another one that uses subtitles when it's an option. A lot of noise or louder noises don't necessarily bother me, but too many conflicting noises easily overwhelm me and the checkouts are one of the worst places. I really struggle with supermarket checkouts as well, because that's always just too much overlapping stimulus.

Like, the radio at work doesn't bother me normally but if I'm having a stressful day it almost chokes out my thoughts and makes it much harder for me to focus - not that my managers understand that, they always insist the radio stays on. I also find auditory processing much harder if I'm stressed or overwhelmed generally. In fact generally I often feel like my body is operating on a delay, I always seem to respond to things a few seconds after everyone else. Then like two seconds later the words actually register and I will grab the thing, but often not before they've gotten annoyed at me for 'ignoring' them. Like, if someone says 'can you grab that for me', I'll hear them talking, but not register what they said or that they were talking to me.

The biggest problem I have is not registering what someone says straight away.
